This flycatcher breeds in eastern China and winters in southern Thailand and the Malay Peninsula. It is recorded mainly during autumn passage in Hong Kong.
Adult males have a short yellow supercilium over the lores, a yellow orbital ring, yellow underparts and rump, olive-green upperparts, a black tail, and a broad white patch on the inner wing coverts. Females or subadults have yellowish underparts and orbital rings with a plain olive head.
It is a migrant and a very rare passage bird in Hong Kong, mainly in autumn. Hong Kong records in spring involved adult males; autumn records involved first-winter birds.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
