A small martin with a grey-brown back, pale underside, and dark chest band. In Britain it arrives from Africa in spring to breed, digging nest burrows in sandy banks near water.
It has a grey-brown back and wings, a white underside crossed by a brown band, and a short, slightly forked tail.
It feeds over water and open countryside, and nests in colonies during the breeding season. Each pair digs a burrow into a steep sandy bank or gravel pit and lines the nest chamber with grass and feathers.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
