This tenrec is known from eastern Madagascar. The original description reports specimens from primary rainforest in Mantadia; later research found overlapping moist-evergreen-forest distributions with a close relative.
The original description calls it medium-sized and robust and notes long, forward-angled incisors resembling shrew teeth.
The nine specimens in the original series came from primary rainforest in Mantadia National Park at about 1,100–1,150 m. A 2020 study reports nearly identical moist-evergreen-forest distributions for this species and M. fotsifotsy.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
