This small seabird lives mostly in Alaska and also in parts of Russia's Far East. The winter adult is mottled brown and white; although it lives at sea, a nest has been documented on a remote alpine ridge.
The winter adult is mottled brown and white above, with a paler belly and a short, pointed bill. A white patch on the dark wing is visible in flight.
It forages at sea, yet a nest documented on Kodiak was a shallow scrape among moss and lichens on a rocky ridge above an alpine lake.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
