The Red-throated Wryneck is a woodpecker relative with a patchy sub-Saharan African range. It searches for ants on the ground and elsewhere, and its subspecies differ in chest markings and plumage.
Adults have a rusty red patch from the throat to the upper chest, with black barring on a gray-brown back. The patch and plumage intensity vary among subspecies.
It mainly searches on the ground, but also around tree bases and on large branches, eating ants, larvae, and eggs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
