This fairywren is endemic to the wet tropics of northeastern Australia. The male retains bright plumage through the year.
Adult males retain their bright plumage year-round rather than changing to a dull non-breeding plumage. Females were also described as unusually colorful relative to congeners.
At rainforest margins in tropical North Queensland, groups maintained territories and bred throughout the year. Some sons remained in their natal group as subordinate helpers.
