The silvery gibbon lives in forests on Java. Its long arms help it swing from branch to branch.
It has long, dense silvery-grey fur, long forelimbs and fingers, and shorter thumbs. These features help it move by brachiation.
The Javan Gibbon habitat model focused on Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, one of West Java’s main remaining habitats. It used presence records from October–November 2015 and April–May 2016. Canopy density contributed 53.9% to the model and annual temperature 35.6%.
Suitable habitat was unevenly distributed across the park: 42.1% of predicted area had high suitability, 24.7% moderate and 33.2% low. The authors recommend improving degraded habitat and patrols to limit degradation along the park’s periphery.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The authors recommend improving habitat quality in degraded areas and conducting law-enforcement patrols along the park periphery.
