The black-capped marmot burrows and lives in family groups in cold mountains and tundra, spending much of the year hibernating.
Its head is black from the nose to behind the ears; the fur below the eyes is sandy-yellow mixed with grey, and a black stripe runs from the neck onto the shoulders.
It lives in family groups and maintains burrows. Hibernation lasts through much of the cold season, but its start varies with local conditions and food availability.
