This large rail occurs in New Zealand. It uses habitats from forest and scrub to grassland and coasts, and eats invertebrates and fruit found on or near the ground.
Weka are large, brown rails with limited flight; they move mainly on foot.
They probe soil, leaf litter and washed-up material for invertebrates, and also eat fruit. Foods and foraging places vary with local conditions.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
