A dark waterbird that forages among wetland plants; when it searches on land, it flicks its tail and reveals its white undertail.
Adults are dark grey-black with a white undertail, a red frontal shield, and a red bill tipped with yellow.
During breeding, groups of 2–7 adults may hold territory together; outside that season, loose flocks can number 100 or more. They eat plants, small aquatic animals, and carrion.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
