An Argentine biodiversity page records the species in open woodland and savanna. It describes the male with a red crest, a pale throat, and a mostly black body.
The male has a red forehead, crown, and crest; gray sides to the head; a whitish throat; and a mostly black body. The source also describes a white line down each side of the neck and white at the bases of the primaries.
The Argentine SIB account lists montes and savannas as habitats and also notes a strong contact call.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
