A large thrush found on Amami-Oshima, with records also from nearby Kakeroma Island. It searches for animal prey and fruit in mature evergreen forest around humid valleys.
About 30 cm long, with pale olive-brown plumage and darker and lighter bands across the head, back, chest and belly.
It is shy and is often near moss-covered rocks beside forest streams. Its diet includes invertebrates and fruit; the 2017 assessment reports nesting on low branches in May and June.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
