A pig of savannas and open woodlands, the common warthog feeds on grasses and roots. Its range records include several subspecies.
It has long legs, a short neck, a broad muzzle and upward-curving tusks. Its narrow tail may be held upright while it trots.
It is active by day and may kneel while grazing. At night it shelters in burrows, including holes dug by other animals.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
