A woodpecker found in lowland Britain. It has a green body and red crown, and searches the ground for ants.
Both sexes have green plumage, a yellow rump, and a red cap. The male has a red center to the black moustache mark; the female lacks it.
It eats mainly ants, searching from the ground for nests in short grass on lawns or woodland rides. In Britain it is commonest in lowland areas, including deciduous woods and grass.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
