A kingfisher that perches in open African woodland and scrub to look for prey on the ground. Fine stripes mark its head and body.
The adult has brown, dark, and buff stripes on the forehead and crown, blue on the back and rump, and pale underparts.
It watches for prey from a branch and dives to catch it. Grasshoppers and other insects are its main foods; it sometimes takes lizards or small snakes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
