This kingfisher is endemic to Java and Bali. Its blue head and wings and large red bill stand out, and it searches for prey in farms and parks as well as near water.
Its head, wings, and tail are bright blue, its underparts deep purplish blue, and its back chestnut brown. It has a large red bill and red legs.
It uses woodland, grassland, farms, coasts, and urban parks, often away from rivers and lakes. From an exposed perch it swoops down to catch insects and small animals.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
