This large dark petrel breeds on islands and mainland headlands in northern New Zealand. It has long, narrow wings and raises its chick in a burrow.
The body is dark black-brown, with grey or buff-white around the bill base and throat. Its long, narrow wings carry it in soaring flight over the sea.
On islands around the North Island, it nests in burrows beneath forest, grass, or shrubs. It forages offshore for squid, crustaceans, fish, and other prey.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
