A warbler of humid Andean forests, ranging from southeastern Peru to central Bolivia.
In the 1929 description of the subspecies punctipectus, the specimens had dark olive upperparts, pale head stripes and a straw-yellow underside with faint dark spots.
It inhabits humid montane forest and is treated as resident rather than seasonally migratory.
