A blue crown, dark eye mask, and long tail with racket-shaped tips make this motmot distinctive. It perches quietly and darts at prey when it spots an opportunity.
The plumage is mainly green with blue and turquoise tones, a blue crown, and a dark mask around the eyes. The central tail feathers end in racket shapes formed by natural wear of the feather barbs.
It may remain still on low or mid-level forest branches while watching its surroundings, then launch at prey. Its food includes insects, small vertebrates, and fruit.
