This woodpecker lives in pine forests of the southeastern United States. A breeding pair may receive help from other family members.
It has black-and-white barring. A male has a tiny red line on the side of the head, often hard to see in the field.
It excavates a cavity in a living pine softened by heart rot. A breeding pair and several helpers share incubation and feeding.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
