This hummingbird is restricted to Great and Little Inagua in the Bahamas. Males have an iridescent rose-purple forehead and throat and a deeply forked tail.
Males show purple to rose on the forehead and gorget, with long forked tail feathers. Females and immature birds are duller with rounded tails.
It feeds on nectar; birds defend small territories around flowers and also catch small insects.
