A small black-and-white woodpecker of North America, often seen in woodlots, parks, and at backyard feeders.
It has black-and-white plumage and moves nimbly while foraging on slender branches and plant galls.
In winter it joins flocks with chickadees and other small birds, finding food near companions. Mixed flocks can help birds find food and spend less time watching for predators.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
