A rodent with defensive quills and a crest over the head and neck.
Long bristles over the head, neck and back can be raised into a crest. Sturdier quills with alternating pale and dark bands cover the rear body.
It is active at night and eats roots, underground stems, bark and fallen fruit. It shelters in caves, rock crevices or burrows.
