This small woodpecker is recorded in southeastern Peru and western Amazonia. A 2009 paper reported records in Acre, Brazil, and described foraging at the edge of terra firme forest with bamboo.
The male has orange rather than red spots on the forehead and crown, with fine barring across the upperparts and underparts.
The paper records a bird foraging at the edge of terra firme forest where bamboo grew. It does not establish the species as dependent on bamboo forest alone.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
