This small owl was described from Príncipe Island in the Gulf of Guinea and reported as a distinct species in a 2022 study.
The description records two colour morphs: rufous and grey-brown.
It occurs in native lowland old-growth forest and calls from dusk into the night. The study also reported territorial behaviour through the year.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
