This fantail occurs on Nendö, Vanikoro and Utupua in the Solomon Islands. A historical Vanikoro description records a brown back, black throat and white-edged breast feathers.
A historical account for Vanikoro describes chocolate-brown upperparts, redder feathers covering the upper base of the tail, and dark tail feathers tipped with white. It records a black throat, black breast feathers broadly edged in white, a white lower underside and brown flanks.
A 2014 survey recorded birds then called Rufous Fantail, under the broader pre-split name, at forest, garden and secondary-forest sites on Nendö.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
