This secretive, ground-dwelling forest rail is endemic to Madagascar. The paper records one subspecies in eastern humid forest and another in the northwestern transition between humid and dry deciduous forest, with regional plumage differences.
Museum comparisons describe the eastern form's lores as olive-gray, its white throat as extensive, and its breast and upper flanks as cinnamon-rufous. The northwestern form differs in the head and back and has paler breast coloration.
The paper describes it as a secretive terrestrial forest bird. The eastern form is reported from humid forest from near sea level to about 2,000 m; the northwestern form occurs in lowland transitional humid–dry deciduous forest.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
