This caracara lives in Andean-Patagonian forests. Its white throat and belly contrast with a dark brown body; it may search for food while soaring alone.
Adults are dark brown with a white throat and belly and a white band on the tail. Juveniles are browner and have mottling on the pale areas.
It occurs in mountain forest and rocky areas and may soar alone on rising air. It takes birds and small animals and also eats carrion.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
