This pocket gopher was described from Ruidoso, New Mexico. The original description records dark brown to nearly black fur above, ochre-brown sides and underside, and white feet and tail tip.
In the original description, September-caught specimens from Ruidoso had dark brown to nearly black upper fur, with a strong ochre-tawny wash on the sides and underside. The tail was black except for its white distal third; the feet and ankles were white. The eight specimens examined from the type locality were described as medium-sized.
This pocket gopher lives underground. In Ruidoso it has been caught at a school athletic field, and collection records also come from Schoolhouse Park.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
