The New Mexico Pocket Gopher is a large species known from Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Its summer coat is cinnamon buff above, while the winter coat is grayer.
The summer coat is cinnamon buff above, with whitish underparts marked by gray areas and more cinnamon buff across the chest. The insides of the cheek pouches and usually the nose are blackish, and the patches behind the ears are small. In winter, the upper coat has less cinnamon buff and looks grayer.
In central New Mexico, the northern population treated under the old name Thomomys bottae connectens inhabits the Albuquerque Basin. Pocket gophers in this region occupy friable soils on the Rio Grande valley floor.
