In breeding plumage, the Pigeon Guillemot is black with white wing patches and bright red feet. It dives for food near rocky shores.
It has a stocky body. Breeding adults are black with white wing patches; feet stay red in all plumages. Nonbreeding adults and juveniles have white bellies and mottled gray-and-white upperparts.
It dives in nearshore waters for small fish and invertebrates, and nests in rock crevices or cliff gaps. In California, small fish make up most of the diet during breeding.
