Swinhoe’s Storm-petrel is a small, dark-brown seabird.
It is small and dark brown overall.
Swinhoe's Storm Petrel breeds on islands in the Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan during the northern summer and mainly winters in the northern Indian Ocean. In May 2017, one bird was found at Ile du Grand-Connétable off French Guiana, the first documented record for South America. It had struck the roof of a hut at night and was later released offshore.
Researchers compared its dark rump, pale wing bars, and white shafts on the outer flight feathers with other storm-petrels. Photographs and a written description were checked by a species expert, confirming the identification. The paper also reviewed 46 Atlantic records documented through July 2017 and reported that the French Guiana bird extended the known Atlantic range to South America.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
