This small owl is found on Anjouan Island in the Comoros. A survey recorded higher encounter rates in natural forest than in modified forest or agroforestry, while also detecting it as low as about 300 m and in agroforestry.
It is about 20–22 cm long. The survey describes two plumage forms: one with a pale greyish-cream facial disc edged in dark markings, and a darker brown form with less distinct markings.
During nocturnal surveys, encounter rates were higher in natural, relatively undisturbed forest than in degraded forest or agroforestry. The owl was also recorded in modified agroforestry and at about 300 m.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
