This forktail lives along rocky streams from the eastern Himalayas into Southeast Asia, where it searches among stones for aquatic insects.
It is 20–25 cm long. The crown and mantle are slate grey, with a white forehead extending above the eyes. Its long black tail has white bands and a white tip.
It walks and hops between stones in streams and feeds mainly on aquatic insects. It often bobs its tail up and down.
