This woodpecker often arrives in forests after fires and feeds mainly on wood-boring beetle larvae.
Its plumage is inky black, with a sharp white stripe across the black face. Males have a yellow patch on the crown.
It eats wood-boring beetle larvae. It may move into a burned forest weeks or months after a fire and use it for about five to eight years while insects remain abundant.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
