A large toothed whale of cold, deep waters in the Southern Hemisphere. It can be difficult to distinguish from similar species, and aspects of its diet and natural history remain poorly known.
It has two pairs of large teeth in the lower jaw. Some animals show many pale scars or blotches on the body.
Groups of about 6–10 are commonly reported, and individuals can make very long, deep dives. Direct evidence about diet is limited, so some comparisons rely on related species.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
