The Kazakhstan vole lives in moist riverine grasslands and mountain meadows. In one downstream population, settlements are built on floating reed mats during floods.
Its back is grayish brown, while the tail is described as uniform in color or only weakly bicolored.
It uses wet river valleys, irrigated fields, mountain meadows, and shrub-covered slopes. A population along the lower Amu Darya is reported to build settlements on floating reed mats to cope with floods.
