The upperparts are golden. A black band runs from behind the eye through the ear-coverts to the nape. The male has a red crest; the female’s crest is yellow.
Lowland moist forest is identified as an important habitat. An Ijen geothermal project survey described forest, scrub and plantations in the area but did not directly record this woodpecker during its baseline survey.
