The Banded Antbird occurs in lowland Amazonian forest in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and Bolivia. It forages on the forest floor and is recorded to about 900 m in the Andean foothills.
It has a brown head and back, two broad buff bars on black wings, dark breast streaks and spots, and a short dark tail with pale outer feathers.
It usually forages alone, walking over the forest floor and probing leaf litter with its bill. It may also pick prey from leaves or hanging branches.
