The Congo free-tailed bat is known from equatorial African forests and is rare in collections. Only a few observations describe its roosts and life.
Specimens collected at Budongo, Uganda, had head-and-body lengths of 8.6–10.1 cm and forearm lengths of 5.3–5.8 cm.
In 1910, two bat species, including Mops congicus, were found inside a hollow tree blown down by a storm in Ituri, Democratic Republic of the Congo. A 2020 chapter says its biology remains poorly known.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
