This brush finch inhabits the Yungas of northwestern Argentina. Records span about 400–2,500 m, and birds move up and down the slopes seasonally.
It is about 16.5 cm long, with olive-brown upperparts, a black eye stripe, ear coverts and moustachial marks, and yellow eyebrow, throat and underparts. The chest is mixed with olive.
It occurs in Yungas forest, especially alder woodland. A reported partial altitudinal movement takes birds down to the foothills in autumn and back uphill around October, near the start of breeding.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
