The Black Petrel is seen in pelagic waters around northern New Zealand. It breeds in island burrows and feeds at sea at night, including on squid.
It is uniformly black, including its legs and feet, with a yellowish bill tipped grey or black.
Pairs nest in burrows on islands and share incubation and chick care. At sea they feed mainly at night on squid, along with fish and other prey.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
