Cabrera's hutia is a small hutia from cays with red mangroves in southern Cuba. It is mainly active at night and feeds on mangrove leaves and bark.
It is the second-smallest hutia in the Antilles after the dwarf hutia. The dorsal coat is based in dark brown or black, while the underside is much paler, sometimes dirty white or yellowish.
It is nocturnal and builds stick refuges among red mangrove roots. It eats leaves and bark, and may swim to a nearby mangrove tree when a refuge is disturbed.
