The black-tailed hutia lives in forests of eastern Cuba. It has very dark fur and a long black tail, and has been observed active in trees at night.
Its woolly fur is dark brown to nearly black. Long black hairs cover the tail and form a brush at its tip.
At study sites it was active climbing trees at night and was recorded feeding on fruit trees such as mango.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
