This small hutia has been recorded from Cuba’s Zapata Swamp. It is not known whether it survives today.
It is described as smaller than other Cuban hutias, but the cited account gives no body-length measurement.
In the Zapata Swamp meadow with Cladium jamaicense, it has been reported to build small platforms with holes that serve as refuges.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
