The eared hutia is a rodent from a small Cuban island. It becomes active around dusk and at night and makes refuges in dunes and mangrove roots.
The back is mostly dark brown, while the underside is off-white to yellowish. The tail is paler than the back and darkens toward its tip.
It is active from dusk into the night and builds refuges in dunes, on firm ground, or among flooded mangrove roots. When climbing branches and roots, it curls the tip of its tail around branches for support.
