Mottled Petrels breed on islands in southern New Zealand and move to the North Pacific afterward. They feed close to the sea surface.
The face is mottled gray and white, with a dark patch behind each eye. A dark M-marking crosses the gray upperparts, contrasting with the white underside and broad black underwing band.
It catches fish, squid, and krill near the sea surface while in flight. It nests in burrows on breeding islands and travels north after breeding.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
