MDD currently lists the Russet Free-tailed Bat as Mops russatus. The original account describes a russet back and paler underside; a Congo expedition recorded one mixed colony in a hollow tree.
The original description gives warm russet-brown dorsal fur that fades to a lighter grey underside. It is a small free-tailed bat.
During the American Museum Congo Expedition, a large colony including this bat and Mops congicus was found in a hollow tree that had fallen in a storm. This is a single documented roost observation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
