The Slate-throated Whitestart lives in mountain forests and is marked by white edges on the tail and a reddish crown patch. Crown and belly colors vary by region.
It has gray upperparts, a red, orange, or brown crown patch, and white tail edges. The belly ranges from yellow in southern populations to orange or red farther north.
It searches among leaves for insects and may flush prey from foliage before catching it in a short flight.
