Adult males have olive-green upperparts, a yellow eyebrow, a black facial stripe forming a broad breast band, a red throat and upper breast, and a yellow belly. Females are similar, but the black band is narrower and does not extend to the lores.
It stays in dense, tangled thickets and often remains in the canopy even while calling. Its diet is reported to consist mostly of arthropods.
